Tension Set Concept: There are four companies in the world that manufactures tension set rings, Gelin Abaci is one of the two companies in the United States. Gelin Abaci is the largest manufacturer of tension set products in the world. The tension concept is more than 40 years old.

Tension Settings Mfg: Tension set products (rings & settings) are manufactured with special alloys by a sophisticated technique which enables the metal to retain it's memory. Depending on the style, tension products have anywhere from 65 to 95 pounds pressure on center stone. The precious metals are especially hardened and this is accomplished by pressure or by thermal treatment. This special treatment to the precious metal results in the precious metal having a certain springiness which will grip the diamond without the necessity of a bezel or claws. The diamond is basically pressed by the girdle on each side by the ends of the ring. The visual effect of the ring can be absolutely stunning. Each metal end has a small groove called the 'seat' into which a small section of the girdle fits.

Tension Products Safety: Tension set ring is (rings & settings) is considered to be safe or safer than four prong settings (prongs can get loose over years). As far as the diamond being more prone to nicking, or breakage, this is not true. Diamond can be damaged in any setting. The tension set mountings can actually cover more of the girdle than other types of settings, thus resulting in a little better protection than some prong settings. Unlike a prong, which can be bent back by only a little bit of pressure against a hard point or surface or tool, the tension sets are held over a much wider area of the girdle, and the entire setting must be sprung away from the stone to actually remove it. Since the whole point of such settings is that the metal is highly conditioned to a spring condition, slight deflections that might, in unusual situations, spring the setting apart a bit, don't hurt since the setting instantly springs right back to it's original position due to it's being engineered as a compression spring. It does not need to actually exert much force on the gem. These are the most popular and simplest form of floating setting.

Tension set diamonds, sometimes known as "floating diamonds" or "suspended diamonds". Ingenious setting which exposes the majority of the diamond to the surrounding light. Prong setting can over-power the stone and make it look heavy. A tension-set diamond is pressure held at its girdle within a gap created at the two pressing ends of a ring. The result is a stunning visual and aesthetic effect which exposes much of the diamond to the eye, and renders it to appear to almost hover in midair.
