Engagement rings: An Astonishing Gift

Engagement rings portray true love and romance. All engagement rings are available in moissanite, clarity-enhanced diamond, better-quality natural diamond or best-quality natural diamond with round, square (princess cut & carre cut), rectangular (baguette cut), pear shaped and even triangle shaped (trilliant) cuts. Whether you are dreaming white-diamond or colored diamond, engagement rings are present in all combinations. To give you more option, diamonds are also available in blue, pink, green and even black and the ultimate in colored stones are yellow diamonds, which are rarer than their white counterparts. Engagement rings studded with sapphires, rubies and emeralds are also in demand. Some women still admire the look the late Princess Diana made popular, a sapphire surrounded by diamonds. For those who think all of this is too fussy, there are some simpler styles out there, such as a pretty solitaire flanked by sleek baguette accents or the now-classic three-stone (past, present and future) style. As far as metals are concerned, it is all about platinum and white gold that rule the jewelry style. And there are also some two-tone designs that feature a white metal with yellow or rose gold. But keep in mind, while selecting engagement ring, look at those style of jewelry and the color of metal that your partner normally loves to wear. Know her taste and buy it to make her really happy. To end with it can be said that exceptionally beautiful and elegant diamond engagement ring shows your style and the love you have for your partner.

4 C’s Diamonds - Clarity, Color, Cut and Carat Weight

Jan 5th, 2008 by admin

The important factors that are used to calculate the value of a diamond is 4 C’s— Clarity, Color, Cut and Carat Weight. One of the most important factors of pricing a diamond is its weight or the carat which is the common scam as described earlier. One carat is one-fifth of a gram or 200 milligrams, usually higher the carat the more expensive is the stone. Carat weight is not a factor which denotes diamond quality. It purely denotes the size of a diamond, by its weight. Obviously it also affects the value or price of a diamond.

Another important measure of a diamond is the clarity or the lack of flaws and it is possibly most important of the factors affecting the quality and price of any diamond. In other words, a diamond with flawless clarity is a diamond free from imperfection. When checking for clarity, a jeweler looks for clear characteristics or signs of any inclusions. Inclusions might include cloudy spots, dark spots, or crystals. The more inclusions the diamond has, the lower the clarity of the diamond, which directly affects its attraction and worth.

The other factor is cut which refers to the proportions, finish, symmetry, and polish of the diamond. These factors determine the fire and brilliance of a diamond. Well cut diamonds sell at a premium and poorly cut diamonds sell at discounted prices. Besides that color is also an important factor. Diamonds can occur in nearly any color, though yellow and brown are by far the most common. But, colored diamonds contain impurities or structural defects that cause the coloration, while pure or nearly pure diamonds are transparent and colorless.

These all 4C’s are the ultimate measures that determine the value of diamond. Thus, next time you shop for a diamond, get proper information and choose your favorite diamond with utmost care and consideration.

Wearing a diamond is easy now

Jan 14th, 2008 by admin

Wearing an expensive necklace or a diamond pendant will be easier for women now. One can wear a diamond necklace or a stylish pendant at just 10 percent of the cost of product. Many companies these days are entering into the business of renting necklaces and pendants. To avail these services one has to become the member of that particular company. Weekly rentals for members run from $6 to $265, and include a wide range of precious and semiprecious jewelry. The best part is that one can even order these jewelry online and can have them at home just after two days of ordering it. But the members have also to pay extra for the insurance and shipping charges, the amount of which depends on the piece they have ordered. Hope diamond mystery explained

Feb 18th, 2008 by admin

The mystery of Hope diamond that has perplexed people for so many years have been solved. The mysterious red glow emitted by the hope diamond has dazzled and captivated people. The famed Hope Diamond, a 45.52 carat deep-blue diamond housed in the Smithsonian Museum, has been long viewed as a cursed gemstone. It was believed that the diamond was stolen from the eye of a sculpted idol of the Hindu goddess Sita. The diamond later became a part of the French Crown Jewels and added more beauty to the collection.

The fact that came out was: The Hope Diamond gives off a mysterious fiery red glow minutes after being exposed to ultraviolet light. This phenomenon was first recorded in 1965. The source of the fiery red glow has puzzled scientists for years. However, US Naval Research Laboratory and Penn State University have recently discovered the source of the phosphorescence comes from the boron present in the gemstone. Boron is the same element that makes this stone appear blue in visible light. Most blue diamonds glow blue or white after exposure to ultraviolet light. The Hope Diamond glows red indicating a mixture of boron and nitrogen. The research changed the curse angle.

The high price of the colored diamonds has created an increase in synthetic colored stones entering the market. Synthetic colored stones have created a market in the hearts of buyers. New technologies, such as the SpectroGem, help to fight the infiltration of synthetically colored stones into the natural gemstone market. These systems scan the movement of light through a diamond and can easily trace colored diamonds from synthetic and “enhanced” diamonds. This same technology can also be used to find out the source of gemstones. Thanks to the power of technology, hope diamond has finally come out of the shadow of curse.

The popular singer will also be featuring in the collection’s ad campaign, shot in LA, and set to look Hitchcockian. The first ad will break in the April issue of W, so hold your breath to have a glimpse of her in a new avatar.

American pearls are sheer magic

Feb 28th, 2008 by admin

Ah, the allure of pearls is breathtaking! Our attraction to pearls is timeless. It is lustrous to the eye, soft on the skin and very hard to resist. It has fascinated each and every one. It is the perfect gift for your valentine.

Among the first gems known to early humans, pearls have grown in value and appeal from accidental finds by fishermen to a multibillion-dollar industry. Their rarity has made them a traditional sign of wealth, filling vaults from Ancient Egypt to Hollywood and gracing many of history’s famous figures.

Pearls were traditionally associated with purity and love. Its appeal took it to different countries. If we go back to history, the first explorers came ashore from the Atlantic; pearls have been an American favorite. The Western Hemisphere became known as the “Land of Pearls” when Columbus discovered an abundant supply of saltwater pearls off the coast of Venezuela in 1498. John Loring, design director at Tiffany’s, estimates that more than 13 tons of the shimmering gems were taken to Europe by the Spanish in the early 16th century.

“When people see those historic portraits in museums of women covered with pearls,” Loring says, “they think they are Oriental pearls, but they’re not - they’re American.”

American pearls are sheer magic and you can find it everywhere. Pearl rings, pearl stud earrings, pearl earrings, pearl necklace, pearl pendants, pearl brooches and pearl strands are not only popular among Hollywood actors and actress but also among common people. The charm of Pearl Jewelry will go on forever.

In many countries around the globe, people will be gathering with friends and family to celebrate Christmas and the start of a new year. And the best part is that as the holiday’s approaches, engagement announcements are expected to be at peak numbers for the year.

From October to February, engagement rings sales touch its peak due to the amount of joy associated with these festivals. “Many people purchase engagement rings this time of year, so they can propose during the Thanksgiving or Christmas holiday,” said Jeff Linenberger, a leading jeweler. He also said that people also like to buy engagement rings during January and February because they want to propose close to Valentine’s Day.

It has been observed that many people tend to get engaged during the holiday season and get married during the summer. Churches often have only a few weddings during the holidays, but some are booked all of June and July. According to Garden City church officials, most of the engagement happens in holidays and marriages in summer. All engagements happen between December and January because a lot of families get together during these holidays, so it becomes easier for the couple to break the news to their families.

In most cases, couples make it a point to purchase engagement rings together. They generally prefer diamond engagement rings. Current bridal fashion favors a solitaire diamond engagement ring set in a band of yellow or white gold, sterling silver, or platinum. However, there are limitless rings for couples to choose from, or have custom-designed. The cut of the diamond may catch everyone’s attention; Princess cut, Tiffany cut, Cartier cut, Square cut, Pear cut, Teardrop cut, Bezel cut, or Round cut – all are stunning and irresistible. The gorgeous Trilogy ring with its three equal-sized diamonds is said to represent the past, the present, and the future.

So, amidst all the hustle and bustle of Christmas and New Year’s shopping, the romantic atmosphere inspires couples to get engaged and purchase engagement rings from leading online jewelry stores.

A woman, her husband and a wedding ring

Dec 31st, 2007 by admin

Wedding ring is used to get marry, but it was surrounded by lots of hugger-mugger when a Calgary couple’s relationship turned out to be a three-ring circus.

James McManus and Corina Lyndeen McCarthy’s matrimonial mess began in December 2005.

For McCarthy, McManus bought a fairly expensive engagement ring. But, McCarthy ended the engagement and returned the ring.

After patching up, the same ring was used in their second engagement as well, which she also ended.

A second ring was ordered for their third engagement but, while it was being made, he cancelled the engagement and ring. The pair finally was engaged for a fourth time on June 20.

McManus said he made it clear on at least three occasions that the ring was to be returned to him in the event their relationship ended. McCarthy denied any such discussion took place.

But Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Colleen Kenny apparently believed the husband.

“It does not at all strike me as strange in the circumstances of this case and given the history of this very volatile up-and-down relationship,” the judge wrote.

And, in his decision, the judge awarded the woman’s third ring — used in their fourth engagement and a marriage that dissolved after just nine days to James McManus.

This romantic day is all about love and tenderness, but surprisingly it has turned out into a holiday driven with competition, hyper-consumerism and dashed hopes. These days, jewelers say, they are seeing more people opting for jewelry gifts for their partners. In a recent poll, it is reported that 85% of women consider jewelry as the “most romantic” gift.

Most of us know that Valentine’s Day is the biggest selling day for jewelry in the United States. The jewelers specialize in all kinds of jewelry including diamond engagement rings and bespoke diamond rings of all shapes and sizes. Here, Jewelers are seeing increase in sales of diamond engagement rings. The most popular engagement rings sold during this period are platinum engagement rings, princess cut diamond rings and classic brilliant diamond engagement rings.

A consumer, Margot—recently engaged— said, “Heart-shaped diamond is a classic gift that women appreciate any time of the year, not just for Valentine’s Day.” “I like to wear ring that is “bold and stylish and more of a fashion piece than a traditional, delicate design,” she explained. For many women, valentine day is not that special. But for most of the women, valentine day is special and on this day, rings are worn to celebrate the beauty of love and if engagement happens on this day, then it’s a great thing.

As engagement ring is a symbol of romance, commitment and a bright, shared future, people order rings according to their own individual requirements. Jewelers offer a choice of cut, clarity, color and carat in diamond to make the perfect engagement ring. And yes, budget matters for many people. So, Valentine’s Day should not be the only day to shower love, it should happen on all days and that to with jewelry.

Rock your life with unique wedding bands

February 21st, 2008

Choosing a wedding band is a pretty tough job. It is arguably the second toughest task. In fact selection of a bride from so many candidates is really tough. For a man who is going to get married, wedding bands have lifetime value. Parties and gifts will come and go but the wedding band stays on forever. And just like your spouse, your ring should be one of a kind. That’s the idea behind the book “500 Wedding Rings” (Lark Books, $24.96), in stores this month.

Jewelry editor Marthe Le Van searched through thousands of entries by artists from all around the world to select the one-of-a-kind rings showcased in the book.

“The designs came from Asia, Europe, Middle East and Africa,” she says. “We selected images based on their artistic value and craftsmanship.”

Any person who is out in the market to shop for wedding bands, hand-crafted designs shown in the book will make you rethink about the traditional gold ring. The buyer may get tempted to buy one such design.

“People can look outside the box a little more. It’s important to have the confidence to make a statement with color, with texture,” says Le Van, who, in addition to being a jewelry expert, has a background in art history.

When it comes to choosing stones, the diamond isn’t the only game in town. “It’s a gorgeous stone but it’s very conventional.” Some of the rings in her book feature rubies and sapphires. One is even made of ice. If you are a fashion conscious person, you can opt for these unconventional stones. Needless to say, it’s in vogue. But for those who prefer diamonds can go for diamond engagement rings.

This book has some mesmerizing designs for your wedding bands. You can rock your life by using one such design to make a unique diamond wedding band.

Pink Sweetheart is the ultimate Valentine Gift

February 16th, 2008

The Pink Emerald Company has attracted the attention of millions of love birds by announcing the sale of the world’s largest heart shaped morganite. The immaculate 169.01 ct. gemstone, nicknamed” The Pink Sweetheart,” was mined in Minas Gerais,

Brazil. This one-of-a-kind gemstone has been graded and certified by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and faceted by the famous gemstone carver Volker Wild in

Idar-Oberstein, Germany. The Pink Sweetheart, priced at $2,500,000, if given to girl friend on Valentine’s Day can be the ultimate gift. Without any doubt, this priced thing can make any girl the most beautiful one and can turn ocean of heads towards it.

Morganite, some people mistakenly refer to as “Pink Emerald,” – is actually pink/rose colored beryl. The rose pink color of morganite can be attributed to the elements manganese and cesium present in its composition. Morganite can be heat treated to enhance this pink color. Emeralds, also a variety of beryl, are colored green from trace amounts of chromium and vanadium. The word emerald has been derived from the Sanskrit word meaning “green.”

As Morganite is rarer than other common forms of beryl such as aquamarine and heliodor, it is highly valued by people. Another rare type of beryl is bixbite, which has a nice scarlet red hue. Bixbite has only been found in small quantities and the largest faceted bixbite gemstone is less than 3 carats. So, the unique - the Pink Sweetheart has set many hearts beating for it and also craving for it.

Holiday Jewelry Sales is Yet to Take Off

January 14th, 2008

During this holiday and festival shopping season, retailers got cold response from U.S. consumers as consumers’ turnout made bleak holiday shopping season. According to reports, spending between Thanksgiving and Christmas rose just by 3.6 percent over the last year, this is considered to be the weakest performance in at least four years.

“Consumers were not really in the mood to spend,” said CL King & Associates analyst William Armstrong. “I don’t think the numbers are going to look that great.”

In many cases, the rising costs for essentials like food and gasoline trumped the desire to buy expensive baubles.

Sherif Mityas, partner and North American industry and service practice leader for global consulting firm A.T. Kearney said, “I believe folks were a little more cautious.”

According to SpendingPulse, MasterCard Advisors’ retail data service, in December, sales of expensive clothing, leather products, jewelry, meals and other luxury items fell by 4.1 percent from a year earlier.

Strong demand at the start of the season for a handful of must-have electronics, like digital frames and portable GPS navigation systems trailed off in December. And robust sales of luxury products could not make up for sluggish sales of jewelry and women’s clothing.

Excluding jewelry sales, which have been a drag for several months, luxury sales rose by 6 percent in December — a month that can account for as much as 25 percent of jewelers’ revenue.

Warm Tones in Jewelry Designs For 2008

December 17th, 2007

As the year draws to a close, the latest buzz in jewelry is that warm tones will be the trend in jewelry designs for 2008. According to jewelry news from the National Jeweler Network, 2008 will be all about gemstones and bold styles.

The latest emerging jewelry trend is the appearance of a new sleek, futuristic look or jewelry with that “high tech” look. You’ll see pairings of black onyx and smokey quartz with bold, metallic bead accents, sometimes blended with faceted Swarvoski crystals and bold, dichroic glass. Beads are often asymmetrical and multifaceted which increases the high tech shine of this ultra contemporary look. You’ll see sculpted resin jewelry components interspersed with metallics, giving a sleek, modern, updated look.

The inspiration is the “Grace Kelly” look; the “less is more” notion. Women will be wearing less jewelry, choosing large, impressive and classic pieces rather than layering on the bangles.

Unique is fabulous, as always, so be on the lookout for something different. Even men will move away from their sporadic diamond comfort zone and join in on the large colored stone trend in bracelets and rings.

Even though black is strong for the 2007 holidays season, colors are warming up with shades of red, pumpkin, and deep mustard yellow making a bold statement. These shades can be seen paired with blacks, grays, and whites for a unique holiday look. Among them, shades of pumpkin, gray and chocolate brown will once again be a wise choice for fashion conscious consumers.

On a final note on the upcoming fall & winter 2007-2008 Jewelry Color Trends, remember that some of the traditional favorites will be returning. It is quite evident that smoky quartz, simulated chocolate and/or champagne diamonds will be in style!

High-End Marketers Are On Men’s Jewelry Buying Spree

December 5th, 2007

Men’s jewelry has become popular these days. Thanks to high-end people, men’s jewelry has taken the market by storm. A new report from Unity Marketing says that’s sales of men’s fine jewelry is hot, doubling to $6 billion from 2004 to 2006. While this still accounts for just about 10% of the total jewelry market, says Pam Danziger, president of Unity, “it’s becoming too large a market for most companies to ignore.” In the coming years, it’s sure to grow by a bigger margin.

High-end marketers are leading in buying latest men’s jewelry. Saks Fifth Avenue, for example, is seeing a brisk business in its cufflink sales this holiday, says Michael Macko, VP and men’s fashion director. “These are not your classic jewelry customers. This is a generation who grew up with no ties at all, and now they’re discovering all kinds of sartorial statements, like bow-ties, cardigans, and French-cuff shirts.” These categories of men are following their mind which is modern and stylish. Their jewelry is harder than women. The modern man may choose a ring made of titanium or stainless steel to really make a statement. Gold and Platinum are preferred metals for more expensive men’s jewelry.

Danziger expects these strong sales to continue throughout 2007. In Unity Marketing’s quarterly surveys of luxury purchases, the incidence of men’s jewelry purchases “rose each quarter this year to a high of 12% at the close of the third quarter 2007, compared to a historic level of 5% purchase incidence in 2006.”

It’s possible that this category of trendy people may take this new segment to a new high. The trends can be seen among people like professional athletes who wear jumbo diamond earrings and musicians who favor products like flashy medallions. Even influential fashion designers are wearing diamond stud earrings. Then there are other young men in corporate sector who are preferring earrings or other types of rings.

Gold is hot again

November 7th, 2007

That yellow metal is hot again – well, according to some popular investors anyway.

Gold has reached prices that haven’t been seen since Jimmy Carter was president. The gold market is going strong all over the world. “Gold bugs,” or people very bullish on gold, are boasting the metal’s return to prominence as a lucrative investment opportunity. It’s helped the cause that gold has almost tripled in price since its low in 1999. People are eyeing this great opportunity. But the advice to people is that before melting your grandmother’s jewelry; consider what’s driven gold to these prices.

Despite its religious, financial and historical attachments, investors and economists said that gold, like any other commodity, is just an investment. And every investment has ups and downs. “For hundreds of years, mankind has been attempting to turn lead into gold,” said commodities trader Jim Rogers. “However, for the last 30 years, you would have been better off trying to turn your gold into lead.”

Gold’s rise is part of a broader commodities boom, investors said. Various commodities have gained since 2001: oil is pushing $100 a barrel; nickel soared from the mid $4,000s to a high earlier this year in the mid $50,000s. Agricultural commodities are in a similar situation — wheat and corn all have hit record prices this year. “You really shouldn’t look at gold alone,” Rogers said. “I am invested in gold, but I am also invested in other commodities. Gold’s rise is part of a larger picture.”

The prices of gold jewelry are touching the sky and the sad part is that it is getting costlier for common men.
