Taking
Proper Care of your Jewelry
Author: Shelia Foster
Keeping your jewelry
looking its best is something that you should be mindful of as your
go about your life. After all you did spend good money on it, so you
may as well take care of it, so it looks great. Remember to keep some
good rubber gloves around your place for when you have to use
household cleansers. Some of these products contain chemicals that
can damage your jewelery or at the very least take the shine out of it.
Even hair
spray can gunk up your jewelry, so leave it off until you are ready
to step out the door. You might think of getting some jewelery
cleaner that you can use to clean your jewelry now and then or you
can have a jeweler do it for you. Remember to have your stones
settings checked and tightened every now and then or you might end up
learning a hard lesson by looking down to see that the stone in your
piece has fallen out to be lost forever.
Pearl
necklaces should be restrung every two or three years particularly if
the necklace is being worn regularly. Pay close attention to loose
and malfunctioning clasps on bracelets and necklaces. If they appear
to not be working perfectly, don't hesitate to have the piece looked
at by a jeweler. Putting off having the clasp repaired is just asking
for trouble. When storing your jewelry keep the pieces separated, so
they won't scratch one another.
You should
keep your jewelery secure and
out of reach of children. Leaving your jewelry case within the reach
of a child is just tempting them to play with the shiny pieces that
draw their attention like bees to honey. If you have very expensive
pieces you should consider having them insured and expensive jewelry
should always be kept in a secure location such as a safe that is
bolted to the floor of a closet. |
