Cotton is the commonly used and in fact makes about 50% of clothing fiber around the world; emerging as the most important material for apparel. Cotton is comfortable, durable, attractive and proven fabrics that have unique features and properties and make it a great material for designer clothes.

Physical characteristics of cotton include the fineness and the length of the fiber. Cotton fibers differ in length- from half inch to 2 inches. Longer length of the fiber is associated with higher quality and is more expensive. Longer fibers are usually reserved for high end shirt fabrics. Shirt of this long fiber cotton include Egyptian, Sea Island Cottons and American Pima. Cotton fineness valued by the fiber's diameter is another important quality. There are mature and immature fibers. Most manufacturers separate the mature from the immature fibers to ensure high durability and reliability.

Feature of absorbency makes cotton as comfortable as an outfit in hot weather. It has a quality to absorb the moisture and then allows it to evaporate by passing through the fabric. This way body is kept cool and able to regulate its temperature. Cotton's ability to hold the fabric slightly off and less pressure on the skin provides maximum comfort than other fabrics in hot weathers. That's' why cotton is so widely worn in hotter countries, like Gulf. This strength of cotton is a weakness in cold weather. Since cotton is not good in retaining body's heat, so are not preferred in winters.

Cotton's clothing is difficult to retain its original shape and has a tendency to wrinkle and does not hold their shape well. A cotton dress usually requires a lot of ironing. But be assured of the fabric that will remain intact. Cotton clothing can be washed with strong detergents, only thing is with the loss of its color during washing. Cotton is resistant to moths as well.
